Book Review: Brain Surgeon: A Doctor's Inspiring Encounters with Mortality and Miracles by Keith Black and Arnold Mann

Book
: Brain Surgeon: A Doctor's Inspiring Encounters with Mortality and Miracles by Keith Black and Arnold Mann

About: Black tells tales of his remarkable life as a neurosurgeon and lets the reader follow along as he treats a few patients.

Pros: Written for the layperson and doesn't get too technical.

Cons: Black is not modest at all and obviously thinks quite highly of himself. He comes off as God's gift to brain surgery, even though he says he doesn't like when patient calls him "God". Drops names, "my friend Forest Whitaker" etc. Only gives us case studies where the surgery went perfectly. Describes the case of a singer that was his patient and uses her real name but makes no indication that she gave her consent for her name to be used. What ever happened to doctor-patient confidentiality?

Book review: The Unlikely Disciple: A Sinner's Semester at America's Holiest University by Kevin Roose

Book
: The Unlikely Disciple: A Sinner's Semester at America's Holiest University by Kevin Roose

About: Roose heads from Brown University to Jerry Falwell's ultra-Christian Liberty University where the Bible is the infallible word of God. Obviously, Liberty is a unique place. It has single-sex dorms, a three-second maximum on hugs and classes that includes Creationism and Evangelism. Weekends are spent playing video games or cards,
homophobia is rampant and swearing consists of tame euphemisms like "son of a biscuit"or "bump you!" and. Roose takes it seriously though and throws himself into Liberty life. He joins the choir, asks a few girls out, goes to Daytona on spring break to try and convert people and even attends a prayer group for guys struggling with resisting masturbating. Even with their different ideology and stricter rules, he sees that Liberty students are very friendly and quite like students at other colleges. Roose's most notable achievement was scoring an interview for the school newspaper with Jerry Falwell himself. While Roose hates some aspects of Falwell's ideology, such as homophobia, he finds that he likes the man's compassion and the fact that he was forced to question his previous assumptions. The interview would turn out to be Falwell's last print interview before his death just two weeks later.

Pros: Well written. Roose gets huge points for his compassion and keeping an open mind. Good wrap-up and conclusion. Selected bibliography was a nice surprise.

Cons: A.J Jacobs, who Roose describes as his "boss" has a blurb on the cover and I prefer more neutral kudos. Doesn't explain Liberty's "demerit" system. I would've liked to know more about the food at Liberty.

13 things that can get a player or coach ejected from a baseball game

The 13 grounds for automatic ejection from a Major League Baseball game:

  1. Spitting at the umpires
  2. Kicking or throwing dirt at the umpires
  3. Flagrantly throwing equipment in obvious protest of a call
  4. Questioning the honesty or integrity of the umpires
  5. Drawing a line in the dirt (likely to show the path of the ball) in an attempt to show up the umpires
  6. Throwing objects from the dugout onto the field
  7. Leaving a field position to argue balls and strikes
  8. Doctoring the baseball
  9. Using a doctored bat
  10. Intentionally throwing at a hitter
  11. Charging the mound and getting as far as the dirt circle
  12. Directing profane language at the umpires
  13. Making physical contact with the umpires

Book review: As They See 'Em: A Fan's Travels in the Land of Umpires by Bruce Weber

Book
: As They See 'Em: A Fan's Travels in the Land of Umpires by Bruce Weber

About: Weber spends a year in the world of baseball umpires, attending umpire school (less than one-percent of umpire school students get to work in the major leagues,) umping games (including 3 innings behind home plate of a major league spring training intrasquad game) and conducting dozens of interviews.

Some Interesting Things I Learned:

  • There are 13 reasons an umpire can eject someone from the game

  • The rulebook has no guidelines for a check swing.

  • As the rulebook defines it, if the ball and a runner's foot arrive on the base at the same time, tie goes to the defense.

  • The "K-Zone" and other TV network strike zone representations are "for entertainment purposes only" and should not be used to accurately judge balls and strikes.

  • Umpires get four weeks of vacation during the MLB season.
Pros: Very eye-opening and interesting look into the non-glamorous lives of working umpires, the folks who have to "start perfect and improve from there." A well written look at the game of baseball from a viewpoint rarely considered.

Cons: A tad bit long. Lots of people discussed at it can get confusing. Index would have been nice

Book review: Why Sh*t Happens: The Science of a Really Bad Day by Peter J. Bentley

Book
: Why Sh*t Happens: The Science of a Really Bad Day by Peter J. Bentley

About: Bentley goes through a hypothetical very bad day in which the science behind 34 mishaps is explained. Oversleeping, shaving cuts, bad milk, bird poop, skipping CDs, skin burns and hard drive crashes are examples of what's covered (good thing this bad day is hypothetical!)

Some Interesting Things I Learned:

  • To remove chewing gum, try peanut butter or mayonnaise (the oils in them help the molecules in the gum slide off whatever they are stuck too). You can also try icing the gum to freeze it, and then break the frozen mass.

  • NASA didn't spend millions of dollars to develop a "Space Pen," They bought them from Fisher. Most normal ballpoint pens will work in zero gravity anyway.

  • If you eat something very spicy and want to cool down your mouth, drink milk. It's thought that the mix of casein and fat will wash away the capsaicin molecules that give chilies their spice. Milk chocolate and several types of beans and nuts are thought to have a similar effect.

  • Cut yourself shaving? Don't dab the cut with a tissue, you'll just keep disrupting your platelets that are trying to heal the area. Instead, apply steady pressure.

  • Anti-lock brakes leave dotted skids that look like ======= . Non-anti-lock brakes leave solid line skids.

Pros: Well-written with very interesting and varied topics. Short chapters make for easy pick-up reading.

Cons: No cites, no full bibliography provided. No real sum up, book just sort of ends.

book review: Toy Monster: The Big, Bad World of Mattel by Jerry Oppenheimer

Book
: Toy Monster: The Big, Bad World of Mattel by Jerry Oppenheimer

About: Oppenheimer is the male Kitty Kelley as he provides a surprisingly salacious account of the history of the Mattel toy company. From feuds between the coked up, bipolar, sex addicted "Father of Barbie" Jack Ryan and the founder of Mattel "Mother of Barbie" Ruth Handler to very unethical business practices and lead-filled playthings and deadly magnets in toys, if you had a rosy image of the company, it will be quite tarnished after reading this book.

Pros: Very fascinating in a "I wouldn't suspect that" kind of way given that it's a toy company. I enjoyed how the workings of a corporation could be be so engaging. The tale keeps you hooked.

Cons: Tabloid-like feel, not all sources cited, only selected bibliography. The book just sort of ends, with no real sum-up.
