Book Review: Meg: Hell's Aquarium by Steve Alten

Book
: Meg: Hell's Aquarium by Steve Alten

About: The fourth book in the Meg series about Megalodons, giant prehistoric sharks that were thought to be extinct but are very much alive. The first discovered Meg now has grandbabies hanging out in Jonas Taylor's Sea World-esque aquarium. An accident occurs and some of the sharks are sent abroad to a new aquarium. Chaos ensues.

Pros: I've read and enjoyed the other books in the Meg series as I like books about sea creatures like Jaws et al.

Cons: I won't be reading the fifth book in the series. I thought this book was awful. Thinly developed characters. I didn't care what happened to any of them. Book felt about 100 pages too long and the story did not grab me. The love affair seems tacked on, unnecessary and is also poorly developed as it moves far too fast to foster any connection from the reader. Illustrations look like what you might see in a low-budget sci-fi film. Many editing mistakes: Page 23 of the hardcover features "yellin g", page 71 has the acronym "MLST" not in caps, a character seemingly turns Russian on page 179 "Did you ever have sleep with Sean Connery?" and on page 175, Newman from Seinfeld in spelled "Neuman".

Grade: D-

Book Review: What Were They Thinking?: The Brainless Blunders That Changed Sports History by Kyle Garlett

Book
: What Were They Thinking?: The Brainless Blunders That Changed Sports History by Kyle Garlett

About: Garlett covers dozens of errors, mental mistakes, confused athletes, dense coaches and awkward situations from the history of sport.

Pros: Describes lots of situations from lots of different sports. Sticks up for those who thinks are wrongly vilified like Bill Buckner and Steve Bartman.

Cons: Juvenile humor and writing. Forgettable. On pages 47 and 48 of the hardcover "...with Hayes there was always a 'but'" is used twice. Doesn't cover league foldings like the XFL.

Grade: C-

Book Review: Panicology by Hugh Aldersey-Williams and Simon Briscoe

Book
: Panicology: Two Statisticians Explain What's Worth Worrying About (and What's Not) in the 21st Century by Hugh Aldersey-Williams and Simon Briscoe

About: The authors explain how concerned or how unconcerned you should be about a bunch of media-hyped topics. Genetically modified foods, Earth annihilation (by terrorism, meteors, global warming, global cooling or ozone holes) and ocean overfishing are just a few of the topics tackled.

Pros: In-text citations. Interesting. Lots covered. Nice skeptic's guide at end

Cons: Silly "scoring system" is not fully explained and seems tacked on. Mentions the Gloucester high school "pregnancy pact" but does not identify it as a hoax. Identified misspelled as "indentified" on page 79 of the hardcover. Former New York City mayor Rudy Guiliani is named "Rudi" on page 90 of the hardcover. No index. Number of citations is way too sparse considering all the information presented.

Book Review: Why We Make Mistakes by Joseph T. Hallinan

Book
: Why We Make Mistakes: How We Look Without Seeing, Forget Things in Seconds, and Are All Pretty Sure We Are Way Above Average by Joseph T. Hallinan

About: Hallinan gives a fascinating tour of why humans make common errors over and over again. Perception, attention, biases and ways to combat these errors are all covered.

Some fun facts I learned:

  • Teams with black uniforms get penalized more than those with other color jerseys
  • Men really don't like to ask for directions
  • If you change an answer on a test, you are most likely changing it to a wrong answer
  • NBA players miss more free throws in the playoffs
  • You'll buy more if a price is listed as four for a dollar as opposed to 25 cents each
Pros: Very interesting, well written. Includes references and bibliography.

Cons: No in text citations. Unclear why he includes both a bibliography and references. I'm assuming he used most of his bibliography as references.
