Book Review: Undercurrents: A Life Beneath the Surface by Martha Manning

Book
: Undercurrents: A Life Beneath the Surface by Martha Manning

About: Written in the form of dated entries, clinical psychologist and psychology professor Manning tells of her almost 2 year battle with a severe bout of depression.

Pros: Very quick read. When I sat down to read it, I usually ending up reading it for longer than I had planned. Well written. Some of the best descriptions of the feelings of depression since Styron's Darkness Visible.

Cons: Her introspection, description and analysis work well when she's focusing on depression but there was a bit too much material about spirituality, religion and poetry for me.

Grade: B+

Book review: Mr. America: How Muscular Millionaire Bernarr Macfadden Transformed the Nation... by Mark Adams

Book
: Mr. America: How Muscular Millionaire Bernarr Macfadden Transformed the Nation Through Sex, Salad, and the Ultimate Starvation Diet by Mark Adams

About: The rise and fall of Bernaar MacFadden, a great promoter of what he called "Physical Culture" which espoused fasting, exercise and healthy eating. Magazines, books, health centers and even a religion are created by Macfadden in order to bolster his cause, bank account and ego. As I had never heard of Macfadden before this book, you can imagine that his huge popularity and empire doesn't last.

Pros: A thorough look at a forgotten man, some of whose ideas were ahead of their time (such as eat less, exercise more). Includes notes and bibliography. Adams even tries some of Macfadden's health regimens like fasting and eating all raw foods.

Cons: Pictures in a clump in the middle of the book, I like them spread out and placed where they fit the text. No in-text citations. Because Macfadden had so many business ventures, it can sometimes read like a dry business book.

Book Review: White House Nannies by Barbara Kline

Book
: White House Nannies by Barbara Kline

About: Kline is the founder of White House Nannies, a nanny placement firm in Washington DC. In her book, she focuses on busy DC couple Janette and David as well as Emma, the nanny Kline matched them with. This narrative is interspersed with tales of notable families, nannies and situations that Kline has dealt with.

Pros: Some of the stories are funny

Cons: Kline name drops and comes off as a bit pompous as she takes credit for successful nanny-family matches and seems to blame failures on traits of the family or the nanny. Stories feel repetitive as they mostly consist of "this nanny/family is great" or "this family/nanny is awful".

Book Review: Happens Every Day: An All-Too-True Story by Isabel Gillies

Book
: Happens Every Day: An All-Too-True Story by Isabel Gillies

About: Gillies (who plays Detective Stabler's wife on Law & Order: SVU) writes about her seemingly perfect marriage that dissolved with astonishing quickness after her husband starts fancying his new colleague who also happens to be one of Gillies' best friends.

Pros: Engaging story and short chapters resulted in "just one more chapter..." syndrome.

Cons: She keeps mentioning that she and the entire Oberlin community is very liberal. You don't need to keep telling us. Commits one of my most hated writing pet peeves by using "had had" on page 52 of the hardcover.

Grade: B+
