You Are a Hard Boiled Egg

You are down to earth and hard to rattle. You have a good head on your shoulders.

You can be a bit stubborn at times, and your determination has only paid off for you.

You are straight with people, and you expect them to be straight with you in return.

You are very no nonsense. You don't have time for pettiness or drama.

Washington Post content deadlines

I asked the Washington Post's Ombudsman about the deadlines for its daily content and thought the response was interesting:

"Basically, there are three deadlines most nights. The first "close" can be as early as 9:30, the second one at 11 p.m. and the third at 12:15 a.m. But those can vary slightly depending on the day of the week and special circumstances (like printing a "zoned" edition with targeted ads, or holding the presses for a late Redskins game, etc.).

These are deadlines for content. Then you have to build in time for the information to formatted into a plate for the press.

And, there are times when major breaking news after midnight ends up in "runners" (that means they briefly halt the press and "replate" the front page). Runners might be used for times when the results of a presidential or gubernatorial election are finally known. But the later you go into a press run, the fewer papers there are to be printed. It's rare that they keep the presses running, unless it's an issue so huge that there will be significant street sales (like when Obama won the presidency).

Hope this helps. I appreciate you reading my column,
Andy Alexander
Washington Post Ombudsman"

Book Review: Saving Sammy: Curing the Boy Who Caught OCD by Beth Alison Maloney

Book
: Saving Sammy: Curing the Boy Who Caught OCD by Beth Alison Maloney

About: A mother writes about her son's experience with hellish Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and Tourette's Syndrome-like symptoms and the long road to finding a cause and treatment.

Pros: Quick, engaging read of an interesting and rare medical phenomenon

Cons: No citations, only a selected bibliography. Blurbs are from doctors who treated her son. Maloney seemingly resents the doctors who didn't agree with the eventual diagnosis, while understandable, her negative view of those trying to help but missed the cause, turned me off a bit

Grade
: B

Book Review: Methland: The Death and Life of an American Small Town by Nick Reding

Book
: Methland: The Death and Life of an American Small Town by Nick Reding

About: Reding focuses on Oelwein, Iowa and its meth "epidemic." Through interviews with townspeople, meth users, meth makers, those involved with drug trafficking organizations, law and drug enforcement agents and government officials, he provides an excellent view of a drug problem from both the individual and the broad policy levels.

Pros: Well written. Reding clearly did lots of interviews, research and traveling to cover all aspects of the story. Epilogue nicely sums up outcomes of the main folks introduced.

A few interesting things I learned:

  • Cooking up one pound of usable meth makes five pounds of toxic waste.

  • Long-term meth use makes your brain stop producing as much dopamine, the neurotransmitter that gives you a natural "high" and the only thing that makes you feel that good again is meth.

  • Pseudoephedrine, a cold medicine ingredient that is key to meth production has not been as tightly regulated as it should due to pressure from the pharmceutical and retail lobbies.

  • Smoking a drug is the fastest way to get it to your brain.

  • All that's needed to make meth is anhydrous ammonia (a common farm fertilizer), a lithium strip from a battery, cold pills with pseudophedrine, some lantern fluid and a basic knowledge of chemistry.
Cons: Although he provides a nice description of his interview and research methods, all of his sources are not cited in the book.

Grade: A-/B+

Book Review: In the President's Secret Service: Behind the Scenes with Agents in the Line of Fire and the Presidents They Protect by Ronald Kessler

Book
: In the President's Secret Service: Behind the Scenes with Agents in the Line of Fire and the Presidents They Protect by Ronald Kessler

About: Kessler gives a far-reaching look of the Secret Service by interviewing agents and management as well as touring department facilities.

Pros: Interesting, if true.

Cons: Unremarkable writing, repeats information, photographs bunched in middle, much of book is shallow dirt on Secret Service protectees,
if agents really did provide all of this information, they severely violated the tenets of the job, stupid chapter on how a psychic supposedly prevented an assassination, no citations or bibliography.
